Innovating for a Brighter Future in Scleroderma Research
by Katie Dineen, Business Development Manager, Preclinical Research
JUNE marks Scleroderma Awareness Month, a crucial period dedicated to raising awareness about this challenging autoimmune disease and highlighting its profound impact on countless lives. At MLM Medical Labs (MLM), we are steadfastly committed to advancing research and supporting therapeutic initiatives to combat systemic sclerosis (SSc), a severe manifestation of scleroderma. Systemic sclerosis is characterized by vasculopathy, extensive fibrosis of the skin and internal organs, inflammation, and immune system dysregulation.
To better understand the pathogenic mechanisms underlying SSc, MLM employs a sophisticated experimental approach. We induce using the chemotherapeutic antibiotic bleomycin. This methodology involves the use of osmotic minipumps to administer bleomycin, providing a more stable and convenient murine model that closely mirrors the multifaceted nature of the human disease. Our implementation of this model offers invaluable insights into the pathophysiology of SSc and fibrotic diseases, thereby facilitating the development of effective treatments.
Our rigorous validation process at MLM includes comprehensive cytokine profiling, detailed histological analyses, and additional assessments to ensure the reliability and relevance of our findings. By advancing preclinical research, MLM plays a pivotal role in enabling pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to develop therapies that have the potential to transform lives.
Much like protecting our skin from the sun’s rays, our collective efforts can shield and support those affected by scleroderma. Join us this Scleroderma Awareness Month and beyond in our mission to make a significant impact on the field of scleroderma research. Together, we can foster progress and bring renewed hope to those battling this debilitating disease.
Understanding Systemic Sclerosis
Systemic sclerosis is a complex autoimmune condition marked by excessive collagen deposition leading to skin thickening and hardening. The disease can also affect internal organs such as the heart, lungs, kidneys, and digestive system, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Symptoms vary widely among patients, making diagnosis and treatment particularly challenging.
The Importance of Research
Research is crucial in unraveling the mysteries of systemic sclerosis. Through our preclinical models, MLM aims to identify biomarkers that can predict disease progression and response to therapy. Our research also seeks to uncover new therapeutic targets to halt or reverse the fibrotic processes characteristic of SSc.
Innovations in Preclinical Models
The use of osmotic minipumps to administer bleomycin represents a significant advancement in preclinical modeling of SSc. This method ensures a continuous and controlled delivery of the drug, closely mimicking the chronic nature of the disease in humans. Our model not only aids in understanding the disease mechanisms but also in evaluating the efficacy and safety of potential therapeutic agents.
Comprehensive Validation Techniques
Our validation process is thorough and multifaceted. Comprehensive cytokine profiling helps us understand the immune response in SSc. Detailed histological analyses allow us to examine tissue changes at the microscopic level. These techniques, combined with other assessments, ensure that our findings are robust and applicable to human disease.
Partnering for Progress
By partnering with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, MLM accelerates the development of new treatments. Our preclinical solutions provide a crucial bridge between basic research and clinical applications, ensuring that promising therapies can move forward efficiently.
